Skepta started the year off on a good note. In February his surprise appearance at a Section Boyz show with Drake, causing a lot of buzz. But since the release of his highly anticipated third studio album Konnichiwa at the beginning of May, he’s been owning the summer. He confirmed that Drake will be signing a deal with Skepta’s Boy Better Know label, something Drake hinted at at the Section Boyz show. joined A$ap Mob onstage in Paris for Fête de la Musique at the end of May, watched A$AP Rocky & Skepta Shut Down Fête de la Musique and got special recognition from Beyoncé, who danced to the opening of his hit ‘That’s Not Me’ during the London show of her Formation Tour in July.
This month it’s only getting better for the Grime superstar, who’s been talking nominated for a Mercury prize for best album along with David Bowie and Radiohead. And, on Friday, tickets for his solo show at north London’s Alexandra Palace on December 2nd sold out in just two hours.
Skepta is getting the recognition and praise he deserves, but, speaking to NME, he’s said he wants those who have worked with him to get their deserved praise too: “It’s important for [the] people who aren’t on the stage to have some sort of celebration. I’m always on the stage and people are always telling me I’m the genius or the creative but there’s so many people with me that [helped with the album].” Congrats to Skepta on his nomination, and by the looks of things, his 2016 takeover isn’t finished yet.
