American comedic actor Jim Carrey is being sued by his ex-girlfriend’s estranged husband, Mark Burton. Burton has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Carrey claiming that he was responsible for the suicide of Cathriona White in September 2015.
After meeting on a film set, Carrey and Irish-born make-up artist Cathriona White began dating in 2012. While the couple split-up in 2013, it was reported that they reunited in early 2015 and became distant from each other once again in the time leading up to White’s death.
Now facing a lawsuit, Carrey has been accused of “using his celebrity status and immense wealth” to illegally fund and access the prescription drugs which were involved in White’s suicide. Burton has also accused Carrey of using his wealth as a means of attempting to conceal his involvement in White’s death. WHAT?!
Since the lawsuit became public knowledge, Carrey has responded with a statement in which he describes Burton’s lawsuit as being a “heartless attempt” to attack the relationship he shared with Cathriona White and to exploit his career. In his statement, Carrey writes: “What a terrible shame . . . there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honour against the evil in this world”. He goes on to explain that White had been experiencing many psychological problems before she and Carrey met and that her death was beyond anyone’s control, even her own.
To the public eye, it is extremely hard to think of Jim Carrey as anything other than a hilarious and all-round nice guy. Following White’s death, Carrey took to Twitter to pour his heart out to his followers after the loss of a friend, companion and partner. He wrote: “(White) was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower . . . to whom living and being loved was all that sparkled”. Carrey undeniably loved White deeply and so it is extremely difficult to believe that he had any malicious involvement in her suicide (at least we hope he didn’t!).
