Jay Sean wins $1.4 million in royalties battle with Cash Money Records

Cash Money Records are under fire from Brit-Asian R&B singer Jay Sean and have been forced to pay up $1.14 million due to an unpaid royalty dispute over songs that have been produced by Jay Sean’s production company Orange Factory.

According to Billboard this week, the lawsuit dates back to 2012 and states that a number of songs that had been produced by Orange Factory for Cash Money were under contract, such as, “Down,” “Lights Off,” and “Do You Remember,” from his 2009 album “All or Nothing”, which had been released through Cash Money Records for his debut.

However, Orange Factory filed the case after they had been continuing to receive statements for royalties that had never been paid. Sean left Cash Money back in 2014 and while speaking to Billboard he stated that, “It got to the point where I was chasing pop success and ‘the smash’ when really my heart wasn’t in it anymore.” It seems like not all water was put under that bridge after all!

The recommendation has yet to be adopted by a District court judge to become an official ruling but it is more than likely to be approved. It looks like Cash money are going to have to dish it out, and Orange Factory will be deemed co-authors of the records and will receive the 50% of money generated from them ($1.14 mil.)

Maybe Jay will be more than happy to buy us that drink we’ve been waiting for all this time, he’s really out of excuses now! Much love.
