Lionel Messi has announced that he is retiring from his national team Argentina after the loss to Chile in the Copa America Centenario final. This is Messi’s fourth final to lose with his country and his third in the last three years.
Messi missed his penalty to help Chile take the Copa America Cup. His teammate Sergio Aguero said in an interview after the match that this is the most devastated Messi has ever been, ”Unfortunately, the most broken one is Messi for his missed penalty. It is the worst I have seen him in the dressing rooms after a game.”
After the match, Messi announced in an interview that the end had come, ”This is it. I fought hard. This is the fourth final I couldn’t win. I would like to win for my national team more than anybody but i think it’s not for me. ”
Fans and players alike are pleading Messi not to give up, even former Argentinian legend Diego Maradona has urged Messi to rethink his retirement.
We know Messi has a lot left to give at the age of 29 but as of now, it looks like we’ll never see him wear the famous #10 Argentina jersey again.
